Grandma Da’s Wassail

My Grandma would make her wassail for the neighborhood children on Halloween and serve it hot or cold depending on the weather. Growing up, I loved to drink hot wassail next to the wood stove on cold winter nights. The clove-studded citrus perfumes the entire house with a warm, sweet aroma.

| Yield: 12 servings | Time: 45 minutes |

Ingredients

1 orange

20 whole cloves

3 cups canned pineapple juice

9 cups apple cider

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Preparation

Pierce the orange with cloves. Bake on cookie sheet at 250F for about half an hour.

In a large pan, or electric kettle, bring pineapple juice and cider to a low boil. Turn heat to very low to a simmer, and add the cinnamon and nutmeg.

Float orange studded with cloves in the juices for at least 15 minutes before serving.

Zero-waste tips

  • Dehydrate the leftover orange and add it to your favorite tea blend.
